At The Human Centered Design Network, weβve been curating a set of 100 Principles of Human-Centered Design β a living collection of values and behaviours that underpin our work as designers, researchers, and changemakers.
This work isnβt about defining the way to do human-centered design. Itβs about surfacing the common ground we already stand on β and making it easier to talk about the ethics, emotions, and structures that shape our work.
We have over 100 Principles that we would love for you to see and read.
Weβve grouped the principles into themes to help people and teams reflect, align, and grow their practice:
β’ Making room for discomfort in order to grow
β’ Fostering continuous learning
β’ Leading with humility, not ego
β’ Embracing ambiguity and seeing failure as part of the process
β’ Designing with, not for
β’ Amplifying marginalised voices
β’ Making equity a non-negotiable priority
β’ Ensuring accessibility and co-creation at every step
β’ Putting empathy into action
β’ Designing for dignity and joy
β’ Treating every interaction as an opportunity for connection
β’ Valuing lived experience
β’ Designing for systems, not just problems
β’ Rethinking power dynamics
β’ Solving for today, while designing for tomorrow
β’ Recognising interconnectedness in everything
β’ Turning insights into action
β’ Prototyping hope, not just solutions
β’ Learning through doing and unlearning through listening
β’ Empowering users through iterative involvement
β’ Sharing ownership and redistributing power
β’ Asking the questions others wonβt
β’ Making space for co-thinking
β’ Bridging gaps between designer and community
β’ Aligning actions with values
β’ Designing for resilience and long-term trust
β’ Improving life for all beings, not just users
β’ Caring for the planet through conscious design
β’ Building trust through honesty and simplicity
β’ Creating clarity in chaotic systems
β’ Designing safer spaces for dialogue
β’ Meeting people where they are
β’ Making the complex feel approachable
β’ Helping people navigate systems
β’ Balancing creativity with practicality
β’ Designing tools that empower
β’ Challenging assumptions for the greater good
β’ Respecting boundaries and constraints
β’ Being accountable for unconscious biases
β’ Staying open to change β design is never βdoneβ
Weβve drafted the content β now we want your input on how this work comes to life.
Weβre currently designing how to visually share these principles and how they might be used:
β’ As a resource for reflection or training
β’ As conversation starters within teams
β’ As part of a bigger framework or toolkit
β
β’ Visual style and clarity
β’ Usefulness in your context
β’ How youβd want to interact with this (cards? posters? slides? workshop tools?)
This is just the beginning. Help us build something that feels useful, inclusive, and alive.
