As a musician, I am no stranger to listening to music that ranges from pop to jazz to heavy metal.
Even though our house always has music playing in the background, I found myself over the last number of years preferring silence whilst working. That was until I found a few genres that I now listen to daily, and it has had a huge affect on my mental well being.
When I was younger, studying for school exams, I would always have headphones on, listening to music quite loud, and I was able to focus. But as I got older, I found music with lyrics to cause too much dissonance and cause friction in my 'thinking' work.
The music we choose to listen to on a daily basis can affect our well-being. I never really saw this connection up until the start of the pandemic where I was craving music without lyrics.
Music that is too upbeat makes me feel exchauted.
Music that is too slow, makes me feel sleepy.
Too angry, makes me...well you get the picture.
As a singer-songwriter, I lean towards music that is melancholic by default. I love it, but again, I now have to become more conscious about the genres I choose to listen to.
What's working for me is music by Hammock. This album is my go-to when I need to focus and get stuff done.
I'd love to learn what works for you? What music are you working to these days?
